Vic,
I couldn't find it in the Admin Tools but is there a chat facility? That'd be grand!

Hi, Tony,
chat would be great, I guess. Is there a module we can add?
Best regards,
Vic
-
Vic,
If you chose an individual, it's supposed to allow you to chat but that's 1-2-1. That would imply that everyone must "join" in order to be viable for "chat".
I can't see a module for a general chat room but if anyone knows of one....

Vic,
It appears that a chat module for SMF does not exist. However, there are others "for free", that you might want to look at;

Or try even:
http://mods.simplemachines.org/index.php?mod=159
;D
-
Doh!
The SMF Site was down when I visited... :P
-
I am not sure if chat is the best way to go about it. Let's install it if you think people will use it!
I was thinking about installing ShoutBox (http://mods.simplemachines.org/index.php?mod=294)
Looks like a pretty cool thing to have. Any final thoughts?
-
Looks good and - well, anything is better than nothing, right? ???
-
I tried and tried and tried to implement this into the board, but somehow it would always show up in the wrong place.
Why, oh why does it not have a nice button somewhere that says: Install Me ? :-\
I will try again tonight when the load is low.
-
Ok, got chat installed at http://www.sggu.com/smf/chat
But... how do we get it inside here? Where should we put it?
Tony - any ideas?
-
...One of those little push buttons along the top... ???
-
How about we all arrange to chat online at a predetermined time?
How about 4pm UK time on Friday 11th August?
-
Sorry Pavel - I'm usually on the road then. Would it fit in if we go on-line late in the UK, so's places like, oh I dunno, Japan could be on-line at the same time...?
-
Ok, so we all move to Japan and meet there!
So, add a button on top? good idea, Tony!
Let me try and see if this will do the trick!

Guys,
My name is Scott, (I was the one who warned you off of phpBB on the old starsystems board) if I can be of any help with this then Im volunteering, I have been using SMF for about 9 months now and know my way around it reasonabaly well.
-
Hey, Scott,
thanks for volunteering!
First of all, good call with SMF - it sure is easy to use and runs great. I like it a lot.
There are several attempts by people to post some spam on the site, but so far so good. We are keeping the whole site open without a need for registering, because I thought it would help people with asking questions faster this way. I really wish to keep it this way; however, I am worried about all that Russian and Nigerian spam...
Interestingly enough, Google did not pick up the forum's threads yet. Only the main pages... interesting...
-
Google cant read always read the posts, as it URLs arent Search engine friendly, there is a mod available to sort that, but the server needs to support it.
Whilst I understand what your saying about registering, and in many ways I agree, without enabling registration and adding the Captcha mod, there will always be some level of spamming.
Maybe it would be a good idea to get a custom skin installed on the forum?

another chat applet for SMF
http://mods.simplemachines.org/downloads/60/integratedchat26.zip
By the way in 1.1RC2 SMF does have an auto install feature, and although its not listed as a stable release, it works perfectly, I never use any of the older versions on my sites.

This mod:
http://mods.simplemachines.org/index.php?mod=7
could be great for the forum, it marks a topic solved once its completed.
from SMF:
1. Topic Solved Mod [ Download ]
Package Type: Modification
Version: 1.21
Author: Grudge
Location of file: http://mods.simplemachines.org/downloads/7/tsolved_v1.21.tar.gz
Description: This is the first version of my topic solved MOD for SMF. This MOD allows you to select boards as "topic solved" boards. These boards will allow the topic started to ask questions and accept/reject answers to them. This is most useful on support boards. There are many settings that can be set up. Including message icons to indicate acceptance/rejection, and changing the background colour of the message to reflect topic starter as well as accepted and rejected messages. All "solved" topics will be marked in the message index with the "solved" topic icon.
Wow!!!
This is fantastic!!! Let me try and install this!!!
I think many of us will benefit from this, because it will help with searching for answers.
My my, look at how much we have grown during the past few years. I think we have quite a lot of know-how here...

To follow up to my crazed and one liner -
I have installed solved/rejected mod, but I have major problem with it:
1. it uses X and Check mark and does not blend well with the other buttons. >:D
2. integrated chat looks awesome, but I tried and: Chat button appeared in the toolbar as a text link and Java chat just did not work - it had : Float button. That's it! So I disabled it.
I am very eager to add Language Mod which would allow users to select what language they are posting it and if this is Japanese, Thai, Portuguese, Turkish and other language that an average user would not be able to see, the posts would just be invisible to them. I think it is a really nifty function because it woould allow non-English speakers to use the board without annoying the rest of us with garbled characters ;)
I wonder what is the difference between 1.1RC2 and 1.07... a lot of mods are for 1.1RC2 and do not work on 1.0.7.
-
there is alot of differences the main one being that almost all the mods work on it and it has new much nicer theme (forum.167.org.uk to see it)
and the auto installer works a treat and tells you before it completes wether or not it expects to find any problems integrating your mod, it can even unistall mods if they are no longer needed or do cause problems.
-
Hi, Scott,
it would be great if you could tell me where to put the code.
What file are we talking about here? And what line should I add?
Thanks,
Vic

Live chat is very enjoyable when we are bore.
